The cowboys cry, “Ki-yip-pee-yi”

It’s really remarkable how far they’ve come, but I really feel very, very encouraged that we’re going to see a very great ending when we see a really free Iraq right in the heart of the Middle East.
Yes, it’s really, really, all so very, very great!
Malicious kidding aside, there’s something deeply disturbing about this comment. Forget for a moment that our buddies in the heart of the Middle East, the Saudis, continue to be one of the most repressive regimes on the planet, and that they aren’t exactly welcoming to Christianity, the official religion of the U.S. right wing, the folks who currently claim that Christianity is under attack in America by God-hating liberals who want to keep the Ten Commandments and Christmas Trees out of courthouses and public schools.
No, plenty has been written about that glaring hypocrisy.
Rather, let’s look at the subtle, violent undertones of the phrase right in the heart of the Middle East. This might play well deep in the heart of Texas, but consider how that might sound to the average, oh, let’s say, Iranian mullah. To the mullah, you might as well be talking about driving a wooden stake right in the heart of Islam, or shooting a silver bullet, or dropping some white phosphorous.
Do we really need to re-live the Crusades? Ugh.

Laura Bush’s smile looks a bit forced. “Please believe me. For the love of god…” etc. ad nauseum… No thanks…
