The second in our recurring series, this time we visit the ancient tradition of boxing. With last year’s Million Dollar Baby having garnered 4 Academy Awards, and advanced word on the upcoming Cinderella Man suggesting it is Oscar-bound, continuing the trend of Hollywood’s/America’s love affair with pugilism (Rocky, Raging Bull, Ali), it’s important to remember that not everyone shares the love.

What can I say? I was raised on TV, it was used as a babysitter, and yet the Jolly Green Giant never convinced me to like vegetables. (I like them now. Many of them. Really, Mom, I do!)

So, seeing the news that Elmer Dresslar, the voice of Jolly, as he was endearingly referred to by his loyal fans, has died, I can’t help wondering why Jolly didn’t click with me.
